Have a Complaint?

DO YOU Have a complaint?

Do you have a complaint about an Ontario government service, or Ontario municipality, university, or school board?

Can the ombudsman help you?

Have you already tried to resolve your problem with the organization’s complaint procedures? If you aren’t sure what options are available, you can speak to the organization directly or the Ombudsman’s staff can assist you.

Can the ombudsman investigate your complaint?

Find out if the Ombudsman can investigate the government organization by checking our Who We Oversee database. The Ombudsman oversees more than 1,000 public sector bodies (such as municipalities, universities, and school boards) and provincial ministries, Crown corporations, administrative tribunals, agencies, boards and commissions, and deals with more than 23,000 complaints a year.

The Ombudsman has no jurisdiction over private companies or individuals, local police, doctors, lawyers, decisions of judges or courts, the Ontario Cabinet, or the federal government. The Ombudsman also cannot investigate hospitals and long-term care homes, but oversees the Patient Ombudsman, who takes complaints about those bodies.

Are you ready to submit your complaint?

Submit an online complaint form (for other options, see below).

It is also helpful to:

  • Get the names and titles of the people you have dealt with at the government or public sector body
  • Keep track of the dates of your contact with them
  • Keep all written communication relating to your complaint
