We help provincial government and public sector organizations ensure they deliver public services fairly and respect people’s rights.
How we work with you
We suggest improvements to fix administrative and fairness issues. For example, we:
- Work with provincial government and public sector organizations to resolve individual complaints and identify areas for improvement to prevent further problems
- Meet regularly with ministry, program and public sector staff to share complaint trends and discuss suggestions for improving services
- Identify administrative issues and share best practices to improve services
- Visit organizations such as correctional facilities to observe conditions, flag trends and discuss solutions
- Investigate complaints or issues at the Ombudsman’s own initiative and publish reports and recommendations to improve public services
- Make submissions to government on proposed legislation, drawing on our extensive experience addressing systemic issues and working to make services fair
- Offer informational and educational presentations to ministry and government staff, providing best practices for administrative fairness

Fairness by Design
Canada’s provincial and territorial ombudsmen developed the "Fairness by Design" self-assessment tool to help public organizations ensure their policies, programs and practices are fair and consistent with the principles of administrative law and the standards of fairness.
By following these standards when reviewing or developing public programs, policies and procedures, those who deliver public services are more likely to treat people fairly and provide excellent service.
Information sessions
We often provide training, presentations and education to government and broader public sector officials. We can:
- Share best practices for good governance and administrative fairness
- Talk about our role in resolving complaints from the public and tell you what to expect if we receive a complaint about your organization
- Answer your questions about the process
- Give you more detailed information about our scope of oversight and how we work
